Find your symptom#

Check you have access first

If Deadlock isn’t in your Steam library at all, the issue is access, not a crash — see how Deadlock invites work.

Quick fixes: try these first#

These standard steps fix a large share of launch problems in Steam games and take a few minutes. We’re confirming each menu path on a current Windows 11 install, with Windows 10 differences noted. Screenshots pending

  1. Restart Steam and your PC. Exit Steam from the system tray so it fully closes, then restart Windows.
  2. Verify the game files. In your Steam library, right-click Deadlock → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Steam re-downloads anything missing or damaged.
  3. Update your graphics driver from your GPU maker’s official app or website (NVIDIA, AMD or Intel).
  4. Close overlays and background tools — recording software, FPS counters, RGB utilities and other overlays — then try again.

Deadlock won’t launch or open#

Likely causes: a Steam process stuck in the background, damaged game files or something blocking the game from starting.

  1. Work through the quick fixes above in order.
  2. Check that your security software hasn’t quarantined game files.
  3. If you set any launch options, clear them and try again.

Further Deadlock-specific fixes are added only after we reproduce or source them. Pending in-game verification

Crashes on startup or after the Valve logo#

Likely causes: a graphics driver or renderer problem, or a conflict with overlays.

  1. Update your graphics driver and close overlays (see quick fixes).
  2. Try switching renderer between Vulkan and DX11 with a launch option. The exact syntax is being verified against the current build before we publish it. Pending in-game verification

Stuck on loading, black screen or Valve screen#

Likely causes: shader compilation after an update, or the same problems as a startup crash.

  1. Give it a few minutes after a patch. The first launch after an update can sit on a loading screen while shaders are prepared. How long this takes on typical hardware is being measured. Pending in-game verification
  2. If it never finishes, verify game files and update your graphics driver.

Crashes when joining a game or mid-match#

Likely causes: a problem introduced by a recent patch, overheating or unstable hardware, or a driver issue.

  1. Check the official forum for a known issue after the latest patch — if many players report the same crash, it’s likely on Valve’s side.
  2. Update your graphics driver and verify game files.
  3. Watch temperatures if crashes happen after some time in a match.

Stuttering, lag spikes and FPS drops (not crashes) have their own planned guide: stuttering, lag and packet loss.

Crash logs: where to find them and what to send#

The crash log folder location is being confirmed on a live install before we publish it, so we don’t send you to the wrong place. Pending in-game verification

When you report a crash, include: what you were doing, the time it happened, your GPU and driver version, Windows version, and the crash log if you have it.

Still not working?#

Report it on Valve’s official Deadlock forum at forums.playdeadlock.com, which also carries the official changelog. If the problem started for everyone at once, it may be a server issue — a servers and matchmaking page is planned.

We never recommend paid “booster” or VPN tools as crash fixes.

FAQ#

Why does Deadlock crash on startup?

Most often an outdated graphics driver, a renderer problem or an overlay conflict. Start with the quick fixes on this page.

Why is Deadlock not launching?

Usually a stuck Steam process or damaged files. Fully restart Steam and verify the game files.

How do I fix being stuck on the loading screen?

Wait a few minutes after a patch in case shaders are compiling; if it never finishes, verify files and update your driver.

Where are Deadlock crash logs?

We’re confirming the exact folder on a live install before publishing it.

Does switching Vulkan/DX11 fix crashes?

It can help when the crash is renderer-related. We’ll publish the verified launch option syntax and our test results.
